Summary
First published in English under the title The Accident, Elie Wiesel's third novel in his trilogy of Holocaust literature has now adopted Wiesel's original title: Day. In the opening scene, a Holocaust survivor and successful journalist steps off a curb in New York City directly into the pathway of an oncoming cab. As he struggles between life and death, the journalist recalls the effects of the historical tragedy of the Holocaust on himself and his family. Like the memoir Night and the novel Dawn, Wiesel again poses important questions involving the meaning of almost an entire annihilation of a race, loss of faith in the face of mass murder and torture and the aftermath and effects of the Holocaust on individuals and the Jewish people. 'Not since Albert Camus has there been such an eloquent spokesman for man.'-The New York Times Book Review

An incredible book. I have not read most of Elie Wiesel's books( this is my second one) but I found out that he is a great author. I could put myself in the position of the character. Especially good is the concept of G-d that Elie Wiesel's character has - one of terrible punishment. Accordingly, G-d is one that does not mind people being massacred or little 12 year old girls being raped. The book, indeed, makes the reader think in what world do we live in. At first we want independence, and to be fully independent it presupposes that G-d should not be involved with us, but after all we want dependence from Him in our affairs. Elie Wiesel asks with his book" What G-d are you G-d,why do you not help us?" and G-d answers " Make up your mind Humans, what type of G-d do you want? P.S What type of Humans you are, but this is small matter compared with you accusing me of my governship of the World. I have delegated everything to you, Humans. Your prayers for Independence and freedom of thought reached me a long time ago - during the Haskala to be precise".
