Summary
From one of the most highly acclaimed novelists of the twentieth century: a truly remarkable book' (The New York Times), an epic story of a life lived simply in the silence of the southwestern desert. With a new introduction by Claire Messud.

In 1851 Father Jean Marie Latour comes to serve as the Apostolic Vicar to New Mexico. What he finds is a vast territory of red hills and tortuous arroyos, American by law but Mexican and Indian in custom and belief. In the almost forty years that follow, Latour spreads his faith in the only way he knows—gently, all the while contending with an unforgiving landscape, derelict and sometimes openly rebellious priests, and his own loneliness. Out of these events, Cather gives us an indelible vision of life unfolding in a place where time itself seems suspended.

Have never listened to this before, have read it several times- excellent narrator! Still a favorite.

What a wonderful story so beautifully read. This is a picture of a time that is lost to the 21st C person/reader so to experience it through Willa Cather’s eloquent language is a delight. I am sure to be listening to this again.

After I got the novel because our book club was going to discuss it, I learned that the Western Writers of America listed it as one of the best western novels of the 20th century. The narrator does an excellent job. The writing style makes the book an easy read. I enjoyed the novel because my wife and I had done a road trip through Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque a few years ago, and I had been to many places traveled by the priests in the book. The novel took me right back to those places, with vivid description. Also, having visited Kit Carson's home, I enjoyed how Cather wove the scout into the novel. While it is recognized as a novel, the book is very episodic. Experiencing it is almost like watching a TV mini series rather than a story told through a novel. That did put me off at first, but the structure makes sense considering this is the story of the lives of two priests, friends from their youth, bringing their religion of Catholicism to New Mexico and the west. Although not a Catholic myself, I enjoyed the book, as a historical novel, of an interesting time in our country.
