Summary
A routine freight run becomes an unbearable waiting game when a single mechanical failure sends a spaceship drifting beyond the Solar System with no way back. The ship still hums, the lights still glow, and inside the cabin almost nothing seems to have changed—but the men aboard know they are accelerating toward permanent exile. There is no planet waiting ahead, no port where repairs can be made, and no simple maneuver that can turn them around. Trapped together with that knowledge, they argue, blame, joke, and slowly unravel as the enormous scale of their predicament becomes impossible to ignore.

As fuel calculations destroy one possibility after another and rescue becomes little more than fantasy, the crew is left with time, rising tension, and each other. Authority begins to erode as every man reacts differently to the prospect of never returning home. Cynicism hardens into cruelty, tempers flare, and even conversation becomes another reminder that the same few faces may be all they ever see again.

What begins as a technical emergency gradually becomes something far more difficult to solve. The machinery can be examined and the numbers checked, but neither offers a way home. Then a final possibility emerges—one that cannot rescue the men but might allow something of them to continue. Suddenly the question is no longer simply how long they can remain alive. They must decide whether an existence without escape, change, or any hope of returning home is an opportunity worth accepting or a fate worse than the one already awaiting them.

Robert Sheckley was one of the most distinctive voices in American science fiction, publishing hundreds of short stories in magazines including Galaxy Science Fiction, Astounding, If, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. His fiction became known for sharp dialogue, unexpected reversals, and endings that often replaced heroic solutions with uncomfortable choices.
