Summary
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and Inferno—now a major film directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones—comes a lightning-fast thriller about an astonishing NASA discovery that uncovers a vicious conspiracy leading all the way to the White House.

When a new NASA satellite spots evidence of an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory...a victory that has profound implications for US space policy and the impending presidential election. With the Oval Office in the balance, the President dispatches White House Intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton to the Milne Ice Shelf to verify the authenticity of the find. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic academic Michael Tolland, Rachel uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery—a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy.

But before Rachel can contact the President, she and Michael are attacked by a deadly team of assassins controlled by a mysterious power broker who will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Fleeing for their lives in an environment as desolate as it is lethal, their only hope for survival is to find out who is behind this masterful ploy. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.

In his most thrilling novel to date, bestselling author Dan Brown transports readers from the ultrasecret National Reconnaissance Office to the towering ice shelves of the Arctic Circle, and back again to the hallways of power inside the West Wing. Heralded for masterfully intermingling science, history, and politics in his critically acclaimed thriller Angels & Demons, Brown has crafted another novel in which nothing is as it seems—and behind every corner is a stunning surprise. Deception Point is pulse-pounding fiction at its best.

This was a great story that kept me going throughout the whole thing. I am glad I had this on audio, burnt onto CDs I could use in the car - if I had it in paperback, I would have lost sleep because this would have been one I could not put down. It made me look forward to my next drive! Lots of action and intrigue. It would make a good movie, but we all know the book is always better, right? ;)

I have had to stop the book in the first 30 minutes because the narrators salivating is absolutely out of control. I have never once heard a narrator so awful and skin crawling in my life. He would be fine if someone had done their job in sound isolation but this is absolutely unbearable

I thought the story moved along at a good pace. Some things were pretty predictable--convenient rescues, etc. I basically knew who would die, who would live, who were the bad guys, etc., but there were definitely some surprises. It was a lot of fun, and I applaud the research that must have been done before writing this book. I also felt the reader was only so-so. As I listened in my car, I heard the reader swallowing or breathing or something. It was creepy. But I did enjoy the plot.

Story is 5 stars. Reader is 1 Star. This was a great story. The downside to this is the reader. The reader can be heard licking his lips alot and lots of heavy breathing. Very annoying especially if you listen with headphones.

I was hesitant to get this book due to some of the lukewarm reviews that it received. But I am a fan of Dan Brown and decided to give it a try anyway. I was not disappointed. The ending had a twist that I wasn't expecting - I thought I had it figured out, but was wrong and surprised.

If you’re wearing headphones while listening to this book be forewarned that Richard Poe makes a lot of wet mouth noises while reading. It’s like he’s literally drooling over this book.

Good read, interesting facts intertwined. A bit slow in the beginning but worth the wait for an exciting ending. Character development is lacking. Extremely detailed descriptions. Overall would recommend.

The plot concept is good. But the book could have accomplished it's purpose better in 2/3rds the time -- minus some of the geological details and plot twists. The reader was expressive. But I didn't fashion hearing him constantly swallowing in my ear.

Not my fav DB novel. Too much shooting action bs that I hate in movies and certainly in books. Too many implausible scenarios. The thing I enjoy about DB is facts and locations, even art woven into the repetitive story line (makes it with the repeated basics ). This one was amatuerish ...and like he was struggling to bring it to a conclusion. The last chapter esp. Sorry Dan. Just being honest.

This was a great book, intriguing story line with many plot twists! The narrator was ok but there were strange long pauses between chapters and the narrator made weird noises with his mouth that distracted from the book. I wished the same narrator that had done Dan Brown's other books would have also done this one.

Another good one from Mr. Brown. One just never know what's truth or what's fiction in his story. Mr. Poe is that Nassau or NASA...I still love that voice of your's and this narration.

Sorry, I found the premise of the discovery to be ridiculous. When it got to the point of suggesting that the earth had been seeded by extra terrestrials because of the similarity of what was 'discovered' with what existed on earth I couldn't take it any more. I know it was all a hoax but couldn't bring myself to listen to another 13 CDs to have that fact revealed.

I thought this book was very good it Kept my attention all the way through, I have enjoyed all the books that Dan Brown has written and although I don't enjoy some of the more descriptive parts where people are murdered etc, I enjoy the way he never lets the reader know the end of the story till the very end. I think its an excellent book thank you Dan Brown.

I've read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown and thought this is going to be same puzzle and action packed book. Unfortunately I stopped on disk 7 and sent it back. During all 7 CDs it felt like this was a short essay with tons of water. Very straight forward and very predictable. Might be there is something more in the end of the book but I could not push myself father down the book. I was half way done with it and still could not find it appealing.

Dan Brown has the unique ability to develop a story line and its characters ... even though the story line takes ample liberty with the believable. The story contained a few too many fatalities but all in all, it was entertaining. The main contribution to this good listening experience was the narrator's ability to bring the personalities of the characters to life by his masterful use of voice inflexions. I could make wonderful mental pictures of the characters, and at times, I laughed out loud when several of the characters made their friendly jousts with each other's personalities and quirks. In summary, if you like Dan Brown, you will not be disappointed in this narration.

I enjoyed this book a lot--but then I have a particular taste for any book about the Arctic or Antarctic (don't know why but I do). It's an exciting cliff-hanger and I especially liked the justice wreaked upon "the villain" senator at the end. Dan Brown, keep 'em comin'!!

I must agree with the rating and comments given by Ho Hum. Yes, it is true, your attention can wander and you don't miss a thing. And, I agree it started out really, really good. It had my full attention and I was excited to listen to the developments. But then it got really really long winded and unnecessarily descriptive. Then it took off and got my attention again but the conclusions were not credible and I was disappointed.

This book is very well read - the narrator does a good job of keeping you interested in the story, and I will look for his name again when choosing an audio book. Too bad the story itself is not all that interesting. It starts of really well, with beautiful people caught up in extraordinary events: political intrigue, amazing scientific discoveries - great stuff! I am not a scientist, but Dan Brown seems to have done a lot of research to make the scientific background to this story believable. However, about one third of the way through, the storyline line deviates from thrilling mystery to absurd tall tale. It's as though Mr. Brown suddenly lost interest in developing the plot, and went straight for cheap thrills just to make sure he wrote a sufficient amount of pages to keep his publisher happy. I would recommend this book to anyone who has something else to do during the second half of the book. If you miss a few words here and there it won't be a big loss.

This is quite a thriller from start to finish. While it follows Dan Brown's formula of unlikely hero becoming involved in a major and dangerous coverup, it nevertheless makes for good listening. I recommend the abridged version if you are not into details.

The end of Deception Point is quite good. While some of the details are a bit fantastical, is that not the point of books? The end is well written, for the most part, display only small sections of questionable writing (the very end seduction part, for example). The very end also is a dead ringer for the end of the DaVinci Code. They seem prone to end with sex between two people not the least bit attracted to one another, until the occurance of a catastrophic event, of course.

I've read Dan Brown's other books & haven't been disappointed by one yet. Deception Point fits right in with the others. It was well written with just the right amount of suspense. In true Dan Brown fashion, this book includes the non-stop action & the twists & turns you'd expect. Being familiar with his style, I found the ending to be a bit predictable, but I still loved the book. I enjoyed the narrator’s reading style as well.

It really is a GOOD read. It is just to long. The twists and turns of the heroine are just too prolonged, she need to be wonderwoman to survive the last two plot deviations. I like Brown, so this was not bad for me. If you can't handle melodramatic plots, stay away.

Profile Avatar

I was positively enthralled throughout this book. As far as I'm concerned, it was better than Da Vinci code or any other Dan Brown work. Perhaps because an underlying theme was sci-fi based, it appealed to me more than religious themes... I would've given it 5/5 but it could have been even better, but not by much. If you like thrillers, this one's right up there.

Great story! As of this book, I've read all of Dan Brown's works. Definitely an author to watch. The narrator was annoying though. He definitely has a problem with ptyalism. Many times I was begging the guy to swallow, and other times I was agitated that he was audibly swallowing so often.

Another thrilling story from Dan Brown. The action again takes place in a 24 hour period, and one adventure follows another in breathless fashion. The characters move beyond cardboard but only slightly. That doesn't matter since the plot is king, and it does keep pulling you along to listen to just a bit more. Enough scientific information to keep it interesting and thought provoking. What if...nah, couldn't be, could it?

Lacking in story development compared to DaVinci Code or Angels and Demons. The plot was too predictable. No surprises here.

Dan Brown has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Although this one is not on the same path as his first two, it had me sitting in the drive way waiting to see if Michael and Rachel would escape one close call after another. Makes me wonder did we ever land on the moon!! hummm.

Somewhat different from his other two books. Less focus on religion and the arts. Instead, Brown put in a ton of time researching NASA and the science behind meteors. Book was a little hard to believe at times and the escapes were a little too convenient at times. But, all in all, it was a very good "read."

This thrilling adventure is my favorite of all the Dan Brown books. The author's attention to detail and scientific realism, although not perfect, sparks the readers' interest to develop a new understanding of astro-biology and geology. The story is filled with suspense, political intrigue, several near death experiences, and surprise developments. As all of Brown's books, the entire story covers less than 48 hours in the characters' lives. To imagine this much happening in such a short time frame is a little hard to swallow, but the continuing urgency of the situation makes the story that much more compelling. Definitely hard to stop listening! Highly recommended!
