Unabridged Audiobook
I was hoping to use this book to help me potentially get DBT Certification. I chose not to continue listening after getting a little more than halfway through. The outline of what DBT is and how it relates to CBT was good, and the general components of the approach were well-outlined. It was not great that the narrator mispronounces Linehan’s name, because she created DBT. I know it can be tough to go back and edit a frequently used word, but it’s necessary in this case, in my opinion. I also found the author’s examples for using behavioral methods to be extreme, choosing the example of a client attempting suicide to manipulate because you have a boundary not to see them more than once a week. And male client sexually harassing their Therapist and being violent at home. I’m not saying these don’t happen, but it felt like an unnecessarily fear-producing example for someone starting to use the approach. Besides that, the narrator, like with many more technical books generally struggled with terminology and coherency because she probably didn’t fully grasp what she was talking about, and that was obvious on a regular basis, making comprehension harder. Her tone was interesting to help keep you engaged otherwise. Overall a fine read, but needed more attention with the audio for sure.
