Dutch Courage and Other Stories

Dutch Courage and Other Stories gathers ten early adventure tales by Jack London, written in his youth and published together in 1922. Each story brims with the raw spirit and restless energy that would come to define London’s later masterpieces.

In the title story, “Dutch Courage,” two boys test their mettle on a dangerous mountain climb and discover that true bravery can’t be found in a bottle. From the Pacific seas to the Alaskan frontier, London’s characters face danger, loneliness, and the quiet reckoning of conscience. These vivid snapshots of courage and endurance reveal a writer already captivated by nature’s harsh beauty and humanity’s struggle for meaning within it.

The collection includes:

- Dutch Courage
- Typhoon Off the Coast of Japan
- The Lost Poacher
- The Banks of the Sacramento
- Chris Farrington: Able Seaman
- To Repel Boarders
- An Adventure in the Upper Sea
- Bald-face
- In Yeddo Bay
- Whose Business is to Live
Together, these stories form a portrait of courage in its many guises—reckless, humble, and deeply human.
