Summary
In a family torn apart by poverty and violence, Hekat is no more than an unwanted mouth to feed, worth only a few coins from a passing slave trader.

But Hekat was not born to be a slave. For her, a different path has been chosen. It is a path that will take her from stinking back alleys to the house of her God, from blood-drenched battlefields to the glittering palaces of Mijak.

This is the story of Hekat, slave to no man.

It was almost like work listening to this book. You couldn’t pay me to hear this nonsense again. Half of the book is arguments on what or whom is god seen or demon possessed. I’m not a fan of villain protagonists either. Halfway through the book I wanted to kill the bi*ch myself. Like, seriously, if she existed I’d shoot her in the face.

I have always loved this book. And having listened to Josephine Baker's immaculate performance I must say I love it even more! Absolutely stunning! I can't wait to listen to the entire series!

The storyline is arduous at the best of times. After the book is half over I wondered if there was any meaning at all to the story. It may be that there is some mystery as to who is "the God" and to whom, however the reader is not compelled to go further based on what it took to endure this first novel. There are some great books out there now by Erickson, Donaldson and others, this book is not among even the mediocre. If your looking to start a new and interesting series, this one is not worth the cost.
