Summary
What is engineering for: private profit or the public good?
In this incisive essay from *Civilization in the United States*, mechanical engineer O. S. Beyer, Jr. examines the transformation of American engineering and the economic forces reshaping the profession.
Beyer traces the field from its early pioneers—independent builders and inventors who designed roads, machinery, cities, and public infrastructure—to the rise of modern industrial corporations. As technology became increasingly essential to manufacturing and transportation, engineers gained greater technical responsibility but often lost control over how their work was used.
Instead of serving society directly, many became salaried employees required to prioritize corporate profit, production speed, and financial efficiency. Beyer warns that engineering systems designed without concern for human consequences can reduce workers to little more than parts in an industrial machine.
He also challenges engineers to reconsider their position between corporate leadership and organized labor. Because their decisions directly affect wages, safety, working conditions, and quality of life, engineers cannot remain socially neutral.
For Beyer, technical knowledge alone is not enough. Engineers must understand economics, politics, labor, and human behavior if technology is to improve society rather than simply enrich private owners.
Originally published in 1922, *Engineering* is a thought-provoking examination of professional ethics, corporate power, industrial labor, and the responsibility of those who design the systems on which modern life depends.
