Summary
A dark psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Clare Mackintosh and Lisa Jewell

There are two sides to every story.
But only one is the truth.

A young woman turns up at a police station. She has been kept prisoner in her own home. Abused and tortured, her every move watched, her every thought controlled. Now she's finally escaped.

That's what she says.

But when the police arrive at the address she's given them, her story doesn't seem to add up. Her husband is missing, but his phone and wallet are still in the house.

She says she's the victim, but what if she's not? What if the stories she's telling aren't her stories at all . . .

The narrator did an amazing job with the many different characters in this read. There was never any question of whom it was she was portraying. The read itself was a little slow for me, but made up for it in suspense. Sometimes I just didn’t want to stop listening and wanted to know more.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! As a domestic violence survivor myself, I was enthralled from the first word!

This should never have been classed as a thriller, since there was no suspense whatsoever, the journey to the conclusion absolutely transparent. The stand out feature, other than the excellent narration, was the humour injected into a miserable situation. Now that was artful, with authentic voices. A shame it was all let down by an absence of plot.

It was good.

Good story. I guessed it partway through but it was still very good. I loved the camaraderie among the women in the house! One thing.... "she goes" was way overused and I did not understand its intended meaning. Narrator was good except for two things: I think she did a terrible job with Gareth's voice. It was almost bad enough to make me stop listening and it ruined my love for Every Breath You Take. The other thing was she often "stayed in character" during narrated parts. For example, if someone was crying, the character spoke as if in tears, but then the "she said" part would be spoken in the same tone. I get that sometimes that is necessary, maybe if the person is thinking something, but it occurred throughout the reading. Otherwise narration was good.

Absolutely brilliant! I absolutely loved this book, got to be one of the best I've read! narrator was great, characters were fantastic. I laughed and I cried. Would definitely recommend listening to!

Great story and narration

Profile Avatar Jennifer B. Feb 2026

The narrator did an amazing job. The book was eh. It was too slow for me, the small political jabs added no value, and the ending left me with questions as to how things were able to happen based on the rest of the book. No explanation, it just happened.

Very good book. Not always fast paced, but entertaining and psychological. For those interested in mental health or domestic abuse, this would be very interesting. The part about the raisin had me laughing out loud. I had to have my boyfriend listen to it also because I thought it was so funny. well written story. Great narration!

This book makes you think. What is going on? Are Sue and Sally friends? Is Kitty for real? Is she a red herring? And Claire- my goodness - the voices - the panic - what really going on? I listen to lots of audio books and did I just find my absolute most favorite narrator? YES I DID!!!!Emma Gregory has to be audio book royalty - there's got to be 20 character voices in this story and they are all top shelf. I didnt want to stop listening - she was a full cast all on her own.

20 mins in. Not hooked. DNF For me

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2026

Good story, narrator brought it to life!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2026

The narrator was excellent. The personality of each character really stood out and had presence.

Profile Avatar S S. Jan 2026

Narration is great and some intriguing ideas But some characters seem unusually dense. And there seemed to be many holes and contrivances at the end making this a disappointing use of time.

Profile Avatar Vicki M. Jan 2026

A complexity of characters in a dark story that only someone who has experienced abuse can possibly understand. Well done. Good narration.

Profile Avatar Teague S. Jan 2026

The last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails! The narration was great.

Profile Avatar Michaela T. Jan 2026

loved it. took a bit to get into it though

Profile Avatar Lola Jan 2026

This was a free book and so glad I picked it.

Profile Avatar Ashley V. Jan 2026

Good listen. I wanted to know how it ended so bad, I jammed through it!

Profile Avatar Mariann S. Mar 2023

Narrator is awesome!

Profile Avatar Kathleen L. Dec 2022

This is a great psychological mystery. I did not figure out where the book was going. At one point I was sure I knew. But I did not. Love this book.

Profile Avatar Ase L. Sep 2022

Narrator is fantastic. She is just doing great presenting all different voices.

Profile Avatar Kris H. Aug 2022

The narrator in this story is amazing!! Really enjoyed this book, you were never sure what was really going on.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2022

I feel this book shouldn't have been a "thriller", a domestic fiction would've been nice where we focus more on the growth of characters instead of a reveal that wasn't even worth it.

Profile Avatar Jessica B. Jun 2022

Somewhat predictable but kept ta guessing. Good narration.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2022

What a fantastic book! Need more like this

Profile Avatar Suzanne M. Apr 2022

Very intriguing, who is telling the truth?? Lots of variables. Some of the Queen’sEnglish is a bit Difficult to understand but you can figure out what they’re talking about and does not impede the enjoyment of the story.

Profile Avatar Brenda L. Mar 2022

Great story, keeps you guessing until the end. Narrator is amazing

Profile Avatar Dori H. Feb 2022

Weird start…stick with it. Definitely worth getting through the frustrating beginning to understand the characters.

Profile Avatar Maya C. Nov 2021

It started off a little rocky but once you get into it, you’re stuck. Overall it was a good book.

Profile Avatar K.R.S Nov 2021

I throughly enjoy this book. I thought the author did a wonderful job of writing these characters and giving the readers a different point of view from each one. The storyline flowed well and was suspenseful. The narration was excellent. I highly recommend.

Profile Avatar Beth T. Aug 2021

Great book

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2021

I loved the real time flow to the book. Excellent Narration. Slightly disappointed with the police point of view but in real life this is often the case. Great read.

Profile Avatar Chie W. May 2021

It started out a little too emotional but I am glad I continued listening. The narrator was superb with variety of accents and different voices. I also enjoyed humorous comments scattered throughout the book.

Profile Avatar Jessica W. May 2021

I feel the narrator made this book bearable. The story, for me, was long long, drawn out and predictable.

Profile Avatar Chester D. May 2021

Pretty intense storyline, I enjoyed the misdirection and the psychological back and forth to Claire's storyline. But I must say that the narrator really brought the characters to life! Managing the various characters tones of voices and dialects really made me wonder if there were actual voice actors for each character at one point.

Profile Avatar Kelly Apr 2021

The Narrator was top notch . She did so well with the different voices and dialects. The story kept me engaged and the humor was wonderfully unexpected.

Profile Avatar Evelyn B. Apr 2021

An unpredictable finale and a very good narrator. Worth a listen.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2021

I really enjoyed this book. It pulled me in right away. It’s was great all the way to the finish! The narrator was very good too!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2021

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish

Profile Avatar Lucy C. May 2020

the story is really good. I love this narrator and get books just because it will be her voice. gripping well worked out story. I recommend.
