John Green, award-winning author and passionate advocate for global healthcare reform, tells a deeply human story illuminating the fight against the world’s deadliest infectious disease.

AN ACCLAIMED BEST BOOK OF 2025: NPR, Scientific American, Science News, Booklist, BookPage, Chicago Sun-Times. Goodreads Readers’ Choice Nonfiction Winner.

Tuberculosis has been entwined with humanity for millennia. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is seen as a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it.

In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year.

In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story, woven through with the scientific and social histories of how tuberculosis has shaped our world—and how our choices will shape the future of tuberculosis.

I am a scientist who works in a TB lab and I found this book to be spot on. I would love to one day live in a world where TB is eradicated. That’s my sincere wish.

Growing up in the Caribbean, many elders would always equate certain coughs to having TB. Understanding the historical and social context and sentiments towards TB was eye-opening and made a great deal of sense to me. If this book doesn't leave you questioning your reception to someone with certain illnesses or your views of individuals with specific illnesses and the urge to fight for better global healthcare... then who are you?

This was an absolutely enlightening read! John Green perfectly blends the history, current realities and the very real impact of TB on those who were simply not born in the right place to be able to access the cure to save them. Henry's story as told by John is both heart wrenching and touching, providing a real person's perspective on the struggles of fighting TB and the inequities faced by many people in countries not "rich" enough to receive the same standard of care we are blessed with in the US and similar countries of great economic strength. This is a book and story I believe everyone should hear because with greater understanding of the issues surrounding TB, the more we can change that reality and hopefully the course of the future of TB.

Usually I’m not a big nonfiction reader and this version of John Green was new to me, but at least I found it to be very informative.

A short book that is well worth the time. Deeply moving and never boring. In a world run by people like Donald Trump and Elon Musk who pit us against each other and tell us to take as much as we can, this book focuses on what is most important and how we can work together to create a better world. John Green is a true gift.

The way John Green wrote about Tuberculosis is outstanding. I've never realized how rooted Tuberculosis is with history, class, and race. A must read.
