Unabridged Audiobook
In Extinction Event Jonathan Yañez delivers a unique take on the apocalyptic zombie-ish genre. I say zombie-ish because the creatures people are being transformed into aren't traditional undead zombies, though they definitely have that all consuming drive to infect everyone. The story focuses mostly on Taylor, a 'cleaner' for a pharmaceutical corporation. Unfortunately their latest drug is having a rather nasty side effect. The story is solid with a solid cast and plenty of action, though I will say the 'changes' that occur to a certain character (yes being vague to avoid spoilers) happen awful quickly and the ending does seem rather abrupt, though this is just the opening book in a series so if you enjoy the story there is plenty more to come. As for the audio, Rachel Leblang does a great job with the narration.
Big Pharma creates a drug to make you feel better about yourself with a small side effect; you become stark raving mad with the "darkness" controlling your need to kill and spread like a zombie!! Taylor works for said pharma company as a "cleaner." As she and her ever-shrinking group of survivors try to get away, she is infected. With a new serum, she not only recovers but has new "powers" granted by the "light" within her. It may sound contrite, but the action and emotion of the main characters pulls the story through.
