Summary
On the very first day of 2019 a ten-year-old girl is found murdered in a backyard in Odense, Denmark. Her body is set up as a morbid work of art; a detailed copy of the final scene in H. C. Andersen's fairy tale; The Little Match Girl; crippled, frozen to death, crunching a pile of burned-out matches. This is the starting point for one of Denmark's most macabre murder cases. A case that quickly attracts the attention of the world press and ignites a fear throughout the Danish population; is there a serial killer at stake, and will there be more 'works of art?'

I got this book as one of the free VIP reads so I didn’t expect much, but it is was very good - well written with a good mystery that kept you guessing.

Very ominous and well written, an excellent read! The narrator did a superb job, though I wish there had been longer pauses between character switching. Otherwise, the twisted concept was a disturbing but refreshing new plot that kept me intrigued and captivated. Best thriller I’ve listened to in months!

So I really loved the story. But the fact that there were no chapter breaks killed me.

The story was interesting, but I felt the ending dragged on a bit too much.

I grabbed this at random. Quite often this way of choosing a book can burn you!! I was more than surprised. The development and initially slow development of characters picked up in pace but went just slow enough to keep you yearning for more! The writers sly deception slowly casting suspicion on several characters kept me guessing start to finish. And child murder based on kids tales was something out of Sherlock Holmes! Excellent

Excellent story and narration kept me gripped throughout. Scandi-noir has never been on my radar but this might change for me.

I stopped, listening to this book halfway through because the gratuitous violence was ridiculous. And they went into graphic detail, describing how these young girls were tortured, and the horrible deaths they suffered, and I just can’t take it especially when it’s kids. I listen to a lot of murder mysteries, but this was just unnecessary over the top violence. And I couldn’t help but thinking this story could be giving some psycho that’s out there some new ideas! I pretty much hated it for that reason

Sometimes the story was hard to follow because without warning or chapter breaks, you'd go from Dina's story to Tom's, or something similar. Needs to be broken up better. Aside from that, the narrators was absolutely amazing and the story was really good. Sad and difficult to listen to, especially as a parent, but really well written. 1

An engaging novel, marred only by a few "It was only a dream" scenes and a concluding hour of verbiage that this listener breezed through at 2x speed. Once the reveal is made—in this case the murderer's identity uncovered—novelists must be quick, quick like bunnies to end their stories because the question that intrigued the listener—whodunnit?—has been resolved. This novel demanded a two-minute epilogue at best.

Great mystery that turns at all the right moments. Narrator did well at feeling the story, but does have some awkward pausing. Highly recommended.

Well-written book- it kept me guessing on who was the killer (s). The narrator was great!! 4 stars because it jumped between narratives abruptly so sometimes it got a little confusing which storyline I was following. Other than that, I really like this book!

The book is quite good. It ends with a little cliffhanger as it was planned as the first in the series. The next book will most likely never happen because the authors split up. Please be aware that it might contain some triggers, for instance torture of children.

Brilliant authors. This story is not for the weak of stomach. I was enthralled all the way through. So wished there were more by Sanne and Brian. Narrator is excellent.

It was interesting, and not bad for a VIP read, but towards the end the plot felt a bit forced and contrived. I also wish there had been longer pauses in narration when the point of view switched from one character to another.
