Summary
Hemingway’s Enduring Classic

Written when he was only only thirty years old, Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel of love during a time of war was heralded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I.

This semiautobiographical tale features an American ambulance driver, Lieutenant Frederic Henry, stationed on the Italian front, who falls in love with Catherine Barkley, a beautiful English nurse. Set against the horrors of war on the battlefield, with tired, demoralized men facing the German attack on Caporetto, Hemingway unforgettably captures their despair as well as the pain of lovers caught in the harsh realities of war, which threaten to pull them apart.

A Farewell to Arms is an unforgettable tale of love and pain, loyalty and desertion. With sparing prose and a realistic account of the pain and intensity of a love overshadowed by the creep of global war was Hemingway’s first best-seller. The novel has been adapted a number of times: initially for the stage in 1930; as a film in 1932, and 1957; and as a three-part television miniseries in 1966. The 1996 film In Love and War, depicts Hemingway's life in Italy as an ambulance driver in events prior to his writing A Farewell to Arms.

How this is an 'enduring classic' is beyond me. Half of the book is about eating and drinking. Absolute ear pollution. I'm not sure the persons who wrote positive reviews even listed to the book.

Enjoyed it tremendously. Hemingway provides a raw, honest depiction of the realities of war which to his view is not glorious at all. I believe the book is based upon his experience in WWI when he served as an ambulance driver for the Italian army. The book shows us that war can be very brutal and in the end very meaningless in many ways. It leads to tradgedy, death, and lingering scars both physical and mental to both the soldiers who serve and the civilians that are impacted by the results of such violent conflict.

Good commentary on war, love, an attempt to find meaning in our lives and the role chance plays in outcomes . Narrator was good.

Definitely of an era, and the female characters portrayal seems a little stereoptypical, but worth a listen

I'm not jumping on the best novel band wagon. Maybe a real look at war from a participant's perspective, but I found the style boring. Wasn't able to listen straight through possibly because of the almost monotone narrator. Maybe for some, but I need something to keep me intrigued and awake while driving.

Narrator is terrible. He sounds like he is narrating a news real from the 1940’s. I have no idea why this book is highly regarded. The characters are completely uninteresting and the supposed love story is unbelievable because it makes no sense. The dialogue is tedious and stilted and over done. We have no idea why the main character always seems to have money and then lives a life of doing absolutely nothing. The ending was contrived and predictable. I know Hemingway was an alcoholic and he spends a large amount of ink describing what, and how much, the characters are drinking. Once again, tedious and exhausting. I like many of hemingway’s works, but this one is just bad.

Good

Overrated. People are just afraid to have a non consensus opinion when something’s this generally well-regarded. 5 stars? Best novel of something or other? Are you really gonna tell me you read/listen to this book and say “Wow! That is one of the greatest books I’ve ever read!” I call shenanigans.
