After a violent protest against nuclear power, Lewis Cole, a columnist and retired Department of Defense analyst, sets out on a mission to find the person responsible for nearly killing his best friend, Detective Diane Woods. Leaving behind his job and home, Lewis follows his instincts and meager leads, traversing rural towns in New Hampshire and influential offices in Washington, D.C., to uncover the identity and background of the ruthless attacker-one who won't hesitate to kill to keep his identity and background secret.

Assisted by Felix Tinios, a security consultant from Boston's North End, Cole finds himself pursued by armed individuals with their own hidden motives, intent on obstructing his pursuit of the truth behind his friend's assault. As Lewis endures personal loss, heartbreak, and betrayal during his journey, he must confront the ultimate test of his resolve-and determine just how far he's willing to go to avenge his friend.
