Unabridged Audiobook
This is an excellent book and very well read by David Case (aka Frederick Davidson) I’ve occasionally seen Flashman described as a “lovable rogue” but there is nothing lovable about him. He is a self-described coward and rascal. He does, however, tell his story very candidly and engagingly and with quite a lot of rough wit. Macdonald Fraser’s writing is outstanding. I have my doubts about sticking with the series due to the types of objectionable content, but if you can roll with the punches on that front, you may well find this, as I did, to be exciting and funny and really quite a remarkable book. David Case certainly brings Flashman to life with a lot of skill, even if he does occasionally seem to be uncertain how to pronounce the man’s name.
the late great Christopher Hitchens was a friend, and he claimed most Englishmen his age learned all they knew about Afghanistan from this wickedly funny book. Ironically, Christopher did not share the author's conservative politics, nor the author's disdain for American interventions abroad. Persons of all politics can enjoy this rollicking comedy and its careful historical moorings.
