Summary
From Axie Oh, the New York Times-bestselling author of The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea, Final Fantasy meets Shadow and Bone in this romantic fantasy reimagining the Korean legend of Celestial Maidens.

Sunho lives in the Under World, a land of perpetual darkness. An ex-soldier, he can remember little of his life from before two years ago, when he woke up alone with only his name and his sword. Now he does odd jobs to scrape by, until he comes across the score of a lifetime—a chest of gold for any mercenary who can hunt down a girl who wields silver light.

Meanwhile, far to the west, Ren is a cheerful and spirited acrobat living in an idyllic mountain village with her adoptive family. But everything changes during one of their festival performances when the village is attacked by a horrific humanlike demon. In a moment of fear and rage, Ren releases a blast of silver light—a power she has kept hidden since childhood—and kills the monster. But her efforts are not in time to save her foster father's life, or to save her adoptive uncle from being grievously wounded.

Determined to save her uncle from succumbing to the poisoned wound, Ren sets off over the mountains, where the creature came from—and from where Ren herself fled ten years ago. Her path sets her on a collision course with Sunho, but he doesn't realize she's the girl that he—and a hundred other swords-for-hire—is looking for. As the two grow closer through their travels, they come to realize that their pasts—and destinies—are far more entwined than either of them could have imagined…

It was great but be warned they don’t have part two on here. I think the age would be more for children than teens. Maybe pre-teens? I’m almost 40 and thought it was a great story though. The narrator is British. I know it’s hard for some people to understand different accents

ngl this feels like a Final Fantasy 7 fanfic just with aristocrats sitting on the disc above the city instead of people working for Shinra. Add to that several scenes that threw me out of the story because "THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS!" like a traincar derailing because it got decoupled from the engine instead of just...slowing down...like it would because the engine isn't what keeps a train on the track and I can't really say I am impressed. The romance also was so predictable and bog standard that it didn't really do much for me either.I wanted to like this book but it just isn't there. It's not trash but I have read way better.

Painfully slow

Decently written, character development average, some nice plot twists that are obvious but at the same time didn't see coming when introduced in the story line, narration was average. Probably will not seek out the sequel but not upset that I was able to hear this story.

Like a K-Drama in a fantasy world. I loved it

This was a magical YA Fantasy with a really interesting mythos. I liked both main characters, but I do hope that they have more character development in book two. The ending was pretty predictable, but the writing and narration were good enough to make the ride enjoyable!

I loved the author’s completely enchanting romantic fairy tale-adventure, The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea, so much that I am on the lookout for all her works. This title did not feel as instantly magical to me, and is indeed a bit on the very young side of maybe-YA, not for its story but for the simplified narrative style. Still, I found the main characters lovely and the premise interesting; a classic fantasy-fairy tale framework with resourceful young heroes who discover their various strengths while fleeing, and then facing, their nemesis. If this is the beginning of a series, I’m on board for the next adventure.

the book just felt like tropes and didn't ever click for me

I fell head first into this world. I loved the story building and the character arcs.
