Unabridged Audiobook
What an incredible experience—the trilogy is worth every bit of high praise it’s had over the decades, and David Timson’s narration is a miracle of actorly artistry. The dream combination of book/s and narrator. If I could give 100 stars, I would. This is one of (maybe THE) the best audiobook experiences I’ve had in 20+ years of constant audiobook consumption. A new friend was getting an earful from me last summer about whatever audiobook I was enthralled with at the time, and said, “My favorite book of all time is THE FORSYTE SAGA,” meaning the trilogy of novels, which is what’s in this single-credit treasure trove. I looked at the MANY available readings by famous actors and loving Librivox amateurs, and listened to several samples, and decided that Naxos’ pick sounded best, and likely was the Cadillac version, and got it here. 38 hours long! but I couldn’t stop listening to it. The writing! The reading! And btw—I’m going to give the 1967 BBC series (26 episodes, I think) a try—it’s on YouTube! At the time, it was revolutionary—churches literally had to change their schedules because people would skip evensong to watch the lates Forsyte episode. It was apparently similar when it came to Masterpiece Theater and changed the course of literary drama on TV. On the other hand, I fear anyone who loves the books will NOT want to have them sullied by the 2026 rendition now playing, which seems to have missed most of the points of the novels, much like the recent WUTHERING HEIGHTS film did.
The brilliant novel. Wonderful.
