The Fourth Bear: A Nursery Crime

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Jasper Fforde

Narrated By: Simon Vance

Publisher: Penguin Audio

Date: August 2006

Duration: 11 hours 0 minutes

Summary:

The inimitable Jasper Fforde gives readers another delightful mash-up of detective fiction and nursery rhyme, returning to those mean streets where no character is innocent. The Gingerbreadman—sadist, psychopath, cookie—is on the loose in Reading, but that’s not who Detective Jack Spratt and Sergeant Mary Mary are after. Instead, they’ve been demoted to searching for missing journalist “Goldy” Hatchett. The last witnesses to see her alive were the reclusive Three Bears, and right away Spratt senses something furry—uh, funny—about their story, starting with the porridge. The Fourth Bear is a delirious new romp from our most irrepressible fabulist.

Genres:

  • Anonymous

Very light and witty. I love the adult twists on children's tales. I can't wait for the next one.

  • Moxie

Clever as always but for some reason I didn't enjoy it as much as I did The Big Over Easy. Perhaps the more time you spend in Nursery Crimes land the more things seem stale. Still, you have to give credit to Jasper Fforde -- his books are always entertaining.

  • Elmo

Love Fforde, am enamored with the NCD books, but really miss Prebble's voice and characterizations. Prebble is a much sexier, much more Prussian Greta. And Jack's voice isn't quite as warm. He needs to be warm, as a person of dubious existence. ( I think that's right..?)

  • Christa Krais

Packed from beginning to end with wit, humor, crime, and fairy tale characters, Fforde's nursery crimes, er, rhymes for adults provide a refreshing spin on modern fiction. The Fourth Bear is filled with intelligent double-entendres, head-spinning mystery, and sly comedy. Fforde again knocks my socks off, grammarian or not, and I can attest that it's not too cold and not too hot....
