Summary
From the Deep Woods to Civilization is the sequel to Indian Boyhood. Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa) gives his account of what it was like to transition from the ways of his Inidan life to that of the white man. His father, long thought dead, had converted to Christianity and wished the same for his son as well as receiving education in the white man's school. At the age of 15, Ohiyesa must learn to balance the old familiar life of the American Indian with that of the new in the world of the white man, one of his first acts being the cutting of his long hair and attending school. It also chronicles his life of college to becoming a doctor at Pine Ridge in South Dakota, his marriage to Elaine Goodale, and his involvement in politics, the YMCA, and Boy Scouts of America. An interesting read but, man, so sad too to see so much internalized racism and negativity towards Native Americans by a Native American. Fascinating to hear his critics of white people and white Christians that still hold true today a hundred years later.

Loved the true account of Indian history by a Native American. Should have been read by a man, though.

A really interesting read and I learnt so much I'd not learnt in history classes living in the UK

Very insightful

An interesting book and I assume his accounts of how things actually happened to be fairly accurate. I grew up in South Dakota and his account of Wounded Knee gave a much more detailed perspective of what was going on than what our history books said.

I loved this book and much respect to this gentleman. I appreciated his observations at the end of the book regarding Christianity. I agree entirely with that part.

Solid Good listen

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the perspective of assimilation and white society. Would have much preferred a different narrator.
