From Your Heart: The Shilling Can is a story that opens in the Clerkenwell District, London, 1860. It chronicles 20-year-old, Penelope Berry, alias, Pennie, who lives in the poorest part of London. She attends the Field Lane Ragged School. Her desire is to become a schoolteacher. Industrious, Pennie studies, passes the exam, earning her certificate as Novice Teacher. Later, a mysterious man at the Smithfield Market makes her an offer that she can hardly refuse – to immigrate to America.
