Good book, ok narrator

My favorite book of the year! I didn't want it to end.

The story was very interesting and the narrator was exceptional- she really brought the characters to life.

I don't really get what all the hype was about this book. It was kind of boring to me.

I love this book. It gave me such detailed descriptions, The law explained in the 1700s through a women’s view the midwife living in a small town the state of Maine Martha Ballard expressed the value of women She recorded all details each da day The authors notes at the end we’re extraordinary

A bit slow and long but great listen and wonderful narrator. Good story

It was interesting and well written. I found a few minor points to be unlikely for the time frame of the story, but I would recommend the book. Narrator was good. I suggest you look up the real Martha Ballard after you read the book.

How many books do we have to suffer through with the same tired theme? Women good; men bad. Women strong; men weak. Women wise; men foolish. It’s really get old! I couldn’t wait for this book to end! So ridiculous!

Too slow. I only made it through half of the book. Turned it off even though I had 400 more miles to drive

I absolutely LOVED this book and was kind of sad when it ended. The characters are so richly formed that I felt I knew each one. The narrator was amazing as well I highly recommend this book

Loved this novel and how it makes the whole community come alive! It’s so carefully pieced together while keeping me wanting more the entire time. Bravo Ariel! I can’t wait to dive into another of your novels. The narrator is excellent! She developed different voices for different characters and she even read quietly when it fit that part of the story. Best narrator that I’ve heard!

Great novel with historical facts weaved into the story

A well told story enjoyed by the four women and two men in our book club in Ojai, California.

Loved this book! I looked forward to each listening time!

It was cool! I learned so much about the way people used to live and the historical treatment of women. Very inspirational.

Loved the time period and town setting. Great characters.

I read this for my book group and loved it, up until almost the end (possible spoiler ahead). When I moved to Maine in 1978 my first apartment was in Hallowell, so I was somewhat familiar with the deep history of the town, and the geography of the area. Many of the names of families and places were still familiar. And Martha’s story was truly amazing, much of it supported by her extensive diaries and other factual records, which made it even more intriguing. She and her family had a huge impact on the Kennebec communities. So I loved the history of the book, and the good story, until it devolved into a revenge fantasy at the end. That part was not true. Joseph North did rape Rebecca, but never suffered any consequences legal or physical. And to top off my dismay and disappointment was the mention of the Live Oak, which never grew in Hallowell, or anywhere in Maine. We have many beautiful majestic native trees in Maine that she could have used in the story.

I really enjoyed this book. I’ll be reading others of hers. The narrator, very skilled.

Great writing and narration. Well developed characters, a touch of magic with a fox, a crime that keeps you guessing, a truly evil villain, and a brave midwife who doesn't suffer fools. The character of the midwife, Martha Ballard, is a real person who, during her career, delivered 1000. Babies. Highly recommended.

Loved this book even though there was more reference to childbirth than I would’ve chosen. Brilliantly written with a great story with enough suspense that I needed to get to the end

This is an excellent story, but the narration is just average.

It was absolutely fabulous. I grew up in the Little House books and this felt like a perfect fit for adult me!
