Reminiscent of classics like Band of Brothers and The Things They Carried, this harrowing portrait of a largely overlooked campaign is part war diary, part extreme adventure tale, and---through letters, journals, and interviews---part biography of a group of men who fought to survive in an environment every bit as fierce as the enemy they faced.

This book was difficult because of the number of characters involved. I wish the author had just plunged into the story of the battle without having to introduce each character with his backstory. It is an interesting history which portrays war as very inglorious and the participants as anything but heroes. However, what this group of men endured was horrific and a story that needed to be told.
