Beautifully written and narrated. Transported me, and enthralled me with emotive details. It stirred long buried desires for the creative pursuits. What a gift!
This book has an interesting premise but it goes backward in time. If the story started when the painting was first painted and went on from there to the present it would have been easier to follow. Each chapter was another step backward. I got lost a few times and subsequently wasn't as engaged as I would otherwise have been. I've read many books that took a similar approach without my having an issue but for some reason this one didn't do as good a job of it.
I love books by Freeland. The reverse provenance of the Vermeer painting was well supposed.
