A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER and ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES’S NOTABLE BOOKS OF THE YEAR

A NEW YORK TIMES 'BEST THRILLER' and 'BEST CRIME NOVEL' OF THE YEAR

PEOPLE MAGAZINE’S #1 BOOK OF THE YEAR

ONE OF NPR’S “BOOKS WE LOVE”

ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S “100 MUST-READ BOOKS”

“Extraordinary . . . Reminds me of Donna Tartt’s 1992 debut, The Secret History . . . I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air.” —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR

“This expertly paced thriller …has the kineticism of a well-crafted miniseries.” —The New Yorker

When a teenager vanishes from her Adirondack summer camp, two worlds collide

Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.

Loved it! Character development was phenomenal and I did not anticipate the twist at the end. One of my favorite narrators. I live in the Adirondacks so was very pertinent to me

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2025

Developed characters and combination of plots, however too many characters and too many plots for my taste.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2025

I thought the narrator was terrific! There are a lot of characters and flipping back and forth. Tough to follow sometimes but it worked for me and I was riveted from the beginning. Loved the strong women characters.

Profile Avatar Cakewrecker Dec 2024

Not as great as I hoped it would be. Too much back and forth, too much going on. A good book but not the best.

Profile Avatar Ohood Jul 2025

The plot kept me guessing about what happened throughout! I really enjoyed that we got the point of view of different characters and were going back and forth in the timeline… I really felt sorry for Alice, Louise and Lee…though the ending was quite satisfying…

Profile Avatar Lindsey O. May 2026

Kept me guessing til the very end!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2026

It was a little slow, some parts don’t make sense—lying to save face? Alice being so clueless as to what happened. How the Huetts lost property. Just not plausible

Profile Avatar Chelsea C. Apr 2026

A fantastic character study and slow-burn mystery.

Profile Avatar Sue F. Mar 2026

The mystery kept me interested. Story was a bit long with extra details that were not needed. Great narrator.

Profile Avatar DeeAnn Feb 2026

Loved it!! A lot of characters but outstanding writing!!!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2026

I didn’t like the end

Profile Avatar Calli b Jan 2026

I think there was so much hype around this book that I was only disappointed when I finally read it. It’s definitely more literary/historical fiction than thriller. The dueling timelines and back forth were cool but there were so many supporting characters that sometimes, I was like, who is this one? Maybe if I would’ve read it instead of listened I would feel differently but I thought this was just ok. 3.5/5 stars for me. Except for Saskia Marrleveld. She is such a gifted narrator!

I did not find it challenging to follow different characters stories and english isnt my first language. Some of yalls cognitive function really be limited

Profile Avatar Arlene F. Jan 2026

It was hard to keep track of all the characters while listening to this book. Perhaps it would have been better if I listened to it during longer lengths of time so that is on me. It still had a predictable storyline but I would recommend it.

5 Stars!

I have never disliked a narrator as much! She whispered the entire book! It was hard to hear her and when there was dialogue delivered, she did so at a normal level which was then jarring! I had to raise and lower the volume constantly. Very annoying! I almost stopped listening! I’m sure the reader thought she was adding to the mystery when in fact she was making the story hard to enjoy!

Profile Avatar Froggy Momma Oct 2025

I really love the book! Would love a sequel.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2025

Confusing switching from past to present. It was a surprise ending.

Profile Avatar Jennifer G. Sep 2025

It was a can’t put down page turner!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2025

good story telling

Profile Avatar Alice B. Jul 2025

The story was intricately woven to draw me into the lives of the characters! Great read!

Profile Avatar Leigh B. Jul 2025

Beautifully written and complex story about women, marriage, motherhood, expectations and exploitation all wrapped in a compelling and engaging plot. I loved the variety of viewpoints and characters and loved how the author captured all of their voices and perspectives. Highly recommend!

Profile Avatar Karen S. Jul 2025

This book was great and had me in my feelings. The characters were relatable. It had a few good twists too.

Profile Avatar Tirana S. Jul 2025

I think the ending was meant to be a big unseen plot twist but I found it a bit flat. In fact, the whole book was a bit lacking for my taste.

Profile Avatar Mike B. Jul 2025

too many characters for me and itdidn't really resonate

Profile Avatar Kristin D. Jun 2025

Too much back and forth and too many storylines.

Profile Avatar Ashley R. May 2025

Awful.

Profile Avatar Theresa B. May 2025

Very slow burn, but it has a good ending.

Profile Avatar Kathy K. May 2025

Interesting story, definitely keeps you captivated! Educational on so many levels. Definitely recommend as it gives you much to think about when it comes to how humans across all stations in life make decisions. What a brilliant storyteller our author is here.

Profile Avatar Cammy R. Apr 2025

Really hope that the actual book is better than audio. Just couldn’t get into this

Profile Avatar Morgan C. Apr 2025

Could not get into it. Also quite confusing story line. Lame ending. Let down and a waste of a credit

Profile Avatar KateinSD Mar 2025

Great book from beginning to end. Fun to listen to and many twists and turns that made the characters interesting and the ending unpredictable. I really enjoyed this book and author was great.

Profile Avatar Sally F. Jan 2025

A very engaging story with interesting characters and setting. But a difficult book to listen to and keep track of because of the nonlinear story telling. It's best listened to in very large chunks. There are some clear anachronisms - regarding technology and punk rock - which was only starting to emerge in 1975, and is not likely to have been part of a mainstream ethos available to the young teens in the story. The female narrator's inability to voice male characters realistically and distinctively was also a clear disadvantage.

Profile Avatar AGH Dec 2024

DNF. Couldn’t follow the story line. Too long, too many characters, too much back and forth in time.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2024

Great

Profile Avatar Jenna C. Oct 2024

Excellent book!

Profile Avatar Valerie W. Oct 2024

Great story telling. The "who done it" was cleverly crafted.

Profile Avatar Marla H. Sep 2024

The book was a bit slow moving at first. But it picked up about a third of the way in and offered many twists and turns. A definite page turner at the end. I could not stop listening.

Profile Avatar Alexandra H. Sep 2024

Thrilling story, captivating and well written. The narrator did an excellent job bringing all the characters to life.

Profile Avatar NubianPrincess96 Aug 2024

I’m glad I read the comments and gave this book a chance! It had me hooked, line and sinker from beginning to end!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2024

This book made me feel every emotion. Well written, I had no idea where this story was going and was completely surprised. Love this story so much!

Profile Avatar Sam B. Jul 2024

This book is fantastic- definitely lives up to the hype. As a thriller lover though, know going in the book is far more drama than thriller. There isn’t a strong desire to figure out “who did it” as you’re more learning about the characters lives and how they spiderweb. Overall, I think the book is about the lives and choices of a group of loosely related (some blood related) women, written very well. Some you love, some bug you, but all feel so very real. The desire is more to know what happens to all of them, over solving the crime. It was wonderful and my best read of the year (so far of 30!)
