Summary
Dramatic and exciting account of how twenty-five determined German U-Boat crewmen tunneled from American POW camp, crossed the unforgiving Arizona desert, and attempted to return battle. It was the only organized, large-scale domestic escape by foreign prisoners in U.S. history.

For anyone who enjoyed learning more about Fort Hunt in Nazis on the Potomac, this book offers a welcome opportunity to follow the fate of the German U-boat prisoners as they were distributed to POW camps across the country. The narrative exposes the complete ineptitude of U.S. administration at Papago Park that seems incredible, but perhaps not if quality officers were ticketed for the front lines vs. the backwater residence of the Kriegsmarine prisoners. A nice alternative to the many escape stories of allied prisoners i.e. Colditz, Great Escape, Wooden Horse, etc. The narrator did seem challenged by pronunciation of regional locations such as Gila Bend, Gila River, Guaymas, etc. that dented the credibility of the reading but an entertaining read that featured a nice epilog for one of the submarine skippers.
