Summary
A millionaire is taken suddenly ill, and sensing his mortality, he asks his attorney to do him one last favor—to find and secretly watch over his missing niece, the daughter of his profligate deceased sister. This niece at the appropriate time would become heir to his millions. However, the millionaire is mysteriously murdered, stabbed to death in his sick bed. Oliva Cresswell, the unsuspecting niece, has been a cashier in a large West End store for five years when she meets a Mr. Beale, a self-described wheat merchant, is attacked in her flat and rescued by this Mr. Beale, is offered a job as his confidential secretary, refuses him, is unexplainably sacked and finds herself in need of his offer. The mysteries multiply and deepen as the story proceeds. (Introduction by Don W. Jenkins)

Honestly, at first I considered abortion! I wasn't sure that I enjoyed the narrator's voice. Before the first chapter was over, I was captured, by the story AND the narrator! I love the way he performed the female voices. This book was a perfect mystery, with a love story, an evil villain, with an awful intention, and the subtle comedy had me laughing out loud, several times! A truly great work of literature. And the performance; endearing!

Very good book, excellent narration.

Good story but not narrated at all well

Very good read. Highly recommend

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2019

Sure didn't turn out how I thought at first!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2020

Ran Mattison... enjoyable story, believable characters, not super suspenseful but enough to keep you interested, with a dose of humor thrown in. A few words mispronounced, but not enough to be a distraction or mess up the story.

Loved this book. I’m not convinced by the marriage but I thoroughly enjoyed it. And a fantastic narration. One of the best audiobooks I’ve heard.

Profile Avatar Karla H. Nov 2022

Interesting story line, I enjoyed this audiobook but had to get use to narrator’s voice☺️

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2022

I enjoyed the book and the narration was good. I would recommend it.

Brilliant. Well worth the listening time. Thank you.

Profile Avatar Solveig S. Jun 2022

I really enjoyed this book . It took me a few minutes to get used to the narration but it was worth it

Profile Avatar Rossy M. Apr 2022

I enjoyed this book. Good plot to keep you interested and I loved the narrator. Put a smile on my face.

Profile Avatar Carol B. Apr 2022

This mystery kept me guessing what was going to happen next. I enjoyed it. My first Edgar Wallace. The narrator did well.

Profile Avatar Sherry L. Oct 2021

The narration takes a bit of getting use to but you have to be grateful for the volunteer narrators. I enjoy these old literary classics. Great free books.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2021

Enjoyed it very much!

Profile Avatar Berva Lorraine Hume Sep 2015

How can you not like a free book? This is another book from the past, that takes me to a simpler, slower paced place. It does not have the fast pace of a Clive Cussler thriller, but I very much enjoy the descriptions and language of another time. I appreciate having this option when I am out of credits.

Profile Avatar Bookworm May 2026

Well written suspense mystery for its time

Profile Avatar Janice A. Jul 2025

I enjoyed every minute of it

Profile Avatar Patsy E. May 2025

I am so glad it was free - could not listen to this narrator. Story sounded like it would have been good though. I just couldn’t get past 15 minutes

Profile Avatar Robert H. Oct 2024

irritating narrator

Profile Avatar Miss Biggun Apr 2024

I've been looking forward to this book for a while only to be disappointed, I had to give up after only two chaptersThe story is set in England near the area I live but the narrator had such a broad American accent that it really didn't work for me at all, I found it all very distracting. It's not the narrator's fault at all but it's little things like this that can really spoil a book for me Maybe I'll try listening again at a later date

Not bad

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2024

Good story Great narrator

Profile Avatar Lada M. Nov 2023

It was quite nice, easy listening

Profile Avatar FeliciaFinesse Nov 2023

Mr. Jenkins has become one of my favorite narrators of all time. 10/10. Will listen to anything he reads. Book was also very good. Took off a star because the female character was kinda lame.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2023

I agree that the narrator started off a little rusty and gravely, but if you can get past his mmm mmm this and occasional mispronounced words (Lyon, forte) this is a sweet, easy listen.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2023

I thoroughly enjoyed both the narration and the story. Very intriguing!

Profile Avatar Ashley K. Aug 2023

For a LibriVox book, this was pretty good. Narration was good, once again for a LibriVox recording. I wasn’t sorry that I listened to it.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2023

The narrator was absolutely horrible. Wanted to rate zero.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2023

Quite interesting, if a bit unbelievable, quite enjoyable, once you got into it

Profile Avatar Cherie May 2023

I thoroughly enjoyed both the story and the narration.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2023

good book would of been better with a better narrator

Profile Avatar Victor P. Apr 2023

The plot was interesting, if somewhat far-fetched. With one of the main characters and the narrator hailing from America, it was hard to feel the action was in England, especially with the mispronounced names and words. The narrators diction was at times just too strident and hard on the ear and almost gave up listening.

Profile Avatar Debchick Mar 2023

Fantastic story, well written, and intriguing plot. Great narration.

Profile Avatar Ppc46176 Mar 2023

The story was ok but I didn’t love the narrator.

Profile Avatar Alistair M. Jan 2023

Great book love the way it’s been written

Profile Avatar Jreedrn Jan 2023

I found this audiobook very enjoyable. The plot was interesting, old fashioned, with a hint of love and suspense.

Profile Avatar PuzzlingPandora Jan 2023

An intriguing story. The narrator might seem a bit 'over the top' his portrayals really suit the story. he does a brilliant job of delivering the humour. The ending is a bit of bow-tying in my opinion, but it's the getting there that is important.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2022

The story starts out slow. However, gaining insight into post WWI speech and various mannerisms is fascinating

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2022

my god this narrator is terrible.

Profile Avatar PapaWholeWheat Jul 2022

a good detective story

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2022

Best narrator so far!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2022

Very good very enjoyable

Profile Avatar Rebekah Rose Mar 2022

could not finish the book due to the narrator

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2022

I enjoyed the whole story. Thanks

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2022

I like an old-fashioned mystery, and the plot was ok.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2021

I thought the Narration was done very well, enjoyed the story very much not too long nor too short

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2021

Very interesting plot and book. I enjoyed it a lot. The narrator is a bit stilted and gets some inflection wrong, but is overall tolerable, particularly with the speed turned up a bit.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2021

Really enjoyed this audio - light and easy to follow- with a good storyline

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2021

I listened to the first part of chapter one, I couldn't take any more.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2021

I enjoyed the story very much but why do we have to be told before every episode the narraters name and stupid email address .

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2021

The first part dragged on but I wanted to know how it ended so I tolerated the unnecessary dialogue.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2021

Good story. A bit long but interesting. I liked it.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2021

I agree with the reviews by Ms. McDonald and Ms. Hume. I would like to add that the thoughts of unimaginable catastrophe mirrored the feelings l felt during the last year while living with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2021

Very good reading

Profile Avatar Francine M. Jan 2021

Good storyline

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2021

Enjoyable lizten

Profile Avatar Judy D. Oct 2020

Horrible narration

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2020

It was a good story to listen to while driving. If you get a bit lost, due to being distracted, it is easy to catch up on what is happening in the story without having to rewind. It’s just an entertaining book without being too “deep”

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2020

I liked the characters, plot, and time frame.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

I had trouble at 1st getting into it but it did get better.

Profile Avatar James S. Jul 2020

horrible....quit reading it.

Profile Avatar Julie B. Apr 2020

I really struggled with this narrator.

Profile Avatar Melanie R. Mar 2020

pretty good

Profile Avatar STEPHANIE F. Feb 2020

Poor narration very flat

Profile Avatar Gudrun Birna E Jan 2018

Boring book

Profile Avatar sue L Apr 2017

I find, as with many books, that the repetitive introduction before each chapter, about the book and reader unnecessary, and would be much better without it.

Profile Avatar Mary Joann Wilson Feb 2016

Narrator mispronounced many words. Book pretty good.

Profile Avatar Francis Allcorn Sep 2015

I found it a very interesting book in many respects. One always has to remember that there were no modern technologies, cell phones and such when this story was happening. Don W Jenkins was OK but is nowhere in the same class as readers like Lorelei King or George Guidall. I enjoyed listening though and had several driveway moments waiting for a chapter to end.
