Summary
Thirty-seven years ago, Girard Remington survived a winter crash that destroyed his family. His pregnant wife, Miriam, lived, but their unborn daughter Iris died. Miriam later lost her hearing, Girard was left scarred, and neither escaped the guilt.
They built a green house behind their Montana home as a sanctuary and memorial. Seven flowers. Seven colors. Seven meanings. Every day Girard chooses one for Miriam, while Iris’s ashes rest beneath a waterfall garden created to protect her spirit.
Then Miriam disappears.
Their Buick is found burned at the bottom of a ravine with a body inside and Miriam’s wedding ring among the wreckage. Police suspect Girard. His estranged daughter, Stacey, returns with questions he has spent decades avoiding. As grief, medication withdrawal, buried memories, and suicidal thoughts close around him, Girard prepares Miriam’s urn and reveals the truth: he had been drinking during the crash that killed Iris, and the green house was built from everything the family could not forgive or forget.
But the dead woman in the Buick is not Miriam.
A blinking answering-machine light leads to a hospital, an unidentified patient, and an impossible second chance. Miriam was attacked by a stranger who stole her car, purse, and ring. The thief died after a damaged brake line sent the Buick over the cliff. The assault also led doctors to discover Miriam’s pancreatic cancer at its earliest stage.
Now Girard must decide what to do with the ashes of the woman he buried, whether he can reconcile with Stacey, and whether survival is enough without self-forgiveness.
This literary psychological mystery explores grief, faith, addiction, disability, family estrangement, and the fragile line between coincidence and miracle.
