Kanpei’s Death

From The Curious Case of Hanshichi

By Okamoto Kidou

Translated by Minato Rintarou

A festive day in old Edo turns into a haunting tragedy.

During the lively celebrations of the First Horse Festival, a wealthy merchant family sponsors a popular amateur stage performance. The star of the show is Kakutarō, the talented heir of the Izumiya household, who is set to perform the famous role of Kanpei from The Treasury of Loyal Retainers.

The audience laughs, applauds, and becomes swept away by the drama. Then the unimaginable happens.

In a scene requiring a stage sword, the young actor is gravely wounded when the prop weapon turns out to be real.

What began as entertainment becomes a mystery shadowed by grief, suspicion, and unanswered questions.

Written by master storyteller Okamoto Kidō, creator of the beloved detective Hanshichi, this classic tale captures the atmosphere of nineteenth-century Edo with remarkable vividness. Blending historical detail, theatrical culture, and human drama, Kanpei’s Death is less a conventional murder mystery than a moving portrait of fate, ambition, jealousy, and the fragile boundary between performance and reality.
