The book kept my attention

This was only my second audiobook. It was a great experience. Makes me want to try more.

Interesting story

Fascinating historical fiction! Excellent narrator!

This was a great read, I really enjoyed it as well as the narration.

When I say that the author had another book out, I didn't even read the summary, I just clicked purchase. Her other book, Take My Hand, is in my top ten reads. Happy Land is okay, but not what I was expecting. This story took place in my great state of North Cackalacky. It was about an African Kingdom in America, in the hills of Hendersonville, NC. The land was ruled by a king and a queen and a community of the formerly enslaved. They had built homes, gardens, schools, and a functioning community. The people in town didn't bother them. The way it was described put me in the mind of an Indian reservation. But as history goes, Black and Brown people having land irritates and bothers others. The government, colonizers find every which way to take it and make it there's. Unfortunately,this story is no different. I loved the way the author went back and forth with the past and current time, bringing in the generational stories. It spanned over 4 generations. It took Nikki and her great-great-great grandmother Mother Rita, to save the land and bring the family left back together. Mother Rita told Nikki about her great-great-great-great grandmother Queen Luella and showed her the very own land they once owned. Nikki confused on why her mother didn't tell her about her grandmother, the Kingdom, the land. The more Nikki learned about the Lovejoys, the more she realized how much of her identity is rooted in the land,in the Kingdom. I wonder how much truth is in this story. I wouldn't be surprised at none of this because historically speaking it has been done over and over again. Happy Land is a great read and highlights how important having land/property is and even greater to pass down and keep in the family.
