What is history really for?

In History, acclaimed historian Hendrik Willem van Loon delivers a sharp, witty, and provocative examination of the way Americans understand—or fail to understand—the past.

Writing in the aftermath of the First World War, Van Loon challenges the dry, academic approach to history that reduces the human experience to dates, rulers, battles, and disconnected facts. He argues instead that history should be alive: a compelling account of humanity that helps ordinary people understand the world around them and recognize the forces shaping their future.

With characteristic humor and an unmistakably skeptical eye, Van Loon examines American historical education, the influence of European scholarship, nationalism, wartime propaganda, and the responsibility historians carry when interpreting the past. He warns of what can happen when history becomes a tool for political loyalty rather than a genuine search for understanding.

Originally published in 1922 as part of Civilization in the United States: An Inquiry by Thirty Americans, History remains a fascinating reflection on historical memory, education, propaganda, and the enduring importance of knowing what came before us.

Narrated by John Riddle, this audiobook brings Van Loon's insightful and often surprisingly modern observations to today's listener.
