Holy Bible: English Darby Version

The English Darby Version (often called the Darby Bible) is a 19th-century translation known for its scholarly precision and literal approach. It was the work of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882), a prominent theologian and founder of the Plymouth Brethren.

Dissatisfied with the literary elegance of the King James Version for doctrinal study, Darby prioritized extreme textual accuracy and consistency. His goal was to produce a mechanically literal translation that mirrored the original Hebrew and Greek structures as closely as possible, even at the expense of smooth English idiom. This makes it a valuable tool for detailed textual analysis.

First published in stages (New Testament in 1867, complete Bible in 1890), its direct, unadorned style contrasts sharply with the KJV's poetic majesty. While not designed for public reading or literary appeal, the Darby Bible's rigorous consistency has earned it a lasting reputation as a premier study reference, particularly within dispensationalist circles and for comparative Bible study.
