Unabridged Audiobook
I just finished The Homemade God and absolutely loved it. Rachel Joyce has written a wonderfully atmospheric and deeply moving novel that drew me in from the first page. Four siblings gather at their family’s lake house during a sweltering summer after their father—a famous artist—has died. With him gone, and his final painting missing, they’re left to piece together not just his legacy, but also their own complicated relationships with him and with each other. The characters are relatable, the dynamics between them layered and compelling, and the setting beautifully rendered. Joyce focuses on the way grief can unmoor a family - even a dysfunctional one - when the figure who held everyone together is suddenly gone. She also shines a sharp light on sibling roles—how birth order and family position shape identity, whether you’re the favorite, the golden child, or the one who never seemed to measure up. As one of four kids myself, I felt an immediate connection to the story and to the way old patterns resurface when siblings come back under one roof. This is very much a character-driven novel, filled with pain, tenderness, and hope, and it’s a story that lingers long after finishing. Five stars, to The Homemade God, this fantastic book for readers who enjoy family dramas, sibling stories, and beautifully told explorations of grief and connection.
