Huey P. Newton was one of the most influential, controversial, and complex revolutionaries of the American civil rights era. As cofounder of the Black Panther Party, he became an international symbol of armed self-defense, Black liberation, and uncompromising resistance to police brutality and racial oppression.



Born in Louisiana and raised in Oakland, California, Newton experienced poverty, discrimination, and the violence of the streets. Although he passed through school without learning to read properly, he later educated himself and developed a powerful interest in law, philosophy, history, and revolutionary politics. In 1966, Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Its members openly monitored police activity while carrying legally permitted firearms, creating an image that startled America and attracted worldwide attention. Yet the Panthers were more than their black leather jackets and raised fists. They organized free breakfast programs for children, health clinics, political education classes, transportation for families of prisoners, and other community services designed to address needs ignored by government.

Newton’s rise brought constant surveillance, arrests, imprisonment, and violent conflict. The FBI’s COINTELPRO campaign sought to infiltrate, divide, and destroy the Panthers, while internal disputes and personal rivalries weakened the organization from within. Newton’s own life became increasingly troubled by legal battles, addiction, accusations of violence, and periods of exile and isolation.
