Unabridged Audiobook
Overall, an interesting premature coming-of-age story with exquisitely detailed environments, well defined characters, and sufficient momentum carrying the listener from chapter to chapter. However, it is told from first person through the eyes of a 6-7 year old boy, but using more mature and refined language that a child would not be aware of. When the child does speak, and it is rarely, he does so with whimpering abandon and distress. So the narrator's excellent qualities are in direct contrast with the character that is supposedly speaking to us, which I found a constant distraction. The emotional pain and determination of a child experiencing one horror and loss after the next are presented with a steady, unhurried cadence. It reminds me a little bit of Empire of the Sun.
