In the Fog (1901) is Richard Harding Davis's celebrated mystery novella of a fog-shrouded London evening at the exclusive Grill Club. While a dense London fog paralyzes the streets, three gentlemen—the youngest member, a Queen's Messenger and a naval attaché—each spin a tale of murder, hidden identity and a beautiful and dangerous Russian princess. A man is found dead in a locked house, a priceless diamond necklace vanishes, and every story seems to point the same way. Told in the classic frame style of the detective story, with wit, suspense and a final twist that upends everything the reader has been led to believe, In the Fog remains one of the great early examples of the clubland mystery.
