Summary
OVER 2 MILLION COPIES SOLD OF THE #1 BESTSELLING SERIES!

Don't miss this New York Times bestselling "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets--perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

The narrator was very expressive, but the exaggerated, country southern accents completely took me out of the story. I wish I had read the book on paper instead of listened to it.

left me on a complete cliffhanger

I really liked everything about this book and am looking forward to listening to the rest of the books in this series. Keeps you on your toes and is not boring at all, on the contrary. Love it

Hated the boys voice. I’d say searching the clues never left me excited. At times I felt like 1/2 the book could have been summarized in a chapter. It did keep me reading though so I could learn the answer

Waited almost 11 hours for the twist and it fizzled out.

I thought this book was amazing and narrated very well would recommend

Awesome book I recommend if u like riddles.

The southern accents by the narrator were pretty bad but the story was worse. I was recommended this book based on my other reads but this was soooo boring. 10 hours of listening and 5 of them could’ve been axed completely. I kept listening expecting some big bombshell that made it all worth it but it never came. The “cliffhanger” ending was enough to make me give up the thought of reading the other books.

ahh it was ok.

The narrator was very cringe with the brothers and anyone who has an accent. It would've been much better if she'd read in her own accent; I promise we would have still understood who was speaking. The book itself was fine for YA, the mystery seemed more interesting than it ended up. If I go with the second book I'm not sure I'd listen to the audiobook.

Interesting story and clean. Loved it

the narrator was fine unless she was reading from someone with a southern accent. fun book, didn't care about the romance AT ALL.

I did not enjoy this book, and I did not understand the ending. I had to go on-line to have it explained to me, and, even then, it was anti-climatic. The premise of the book is absurd and the riddle-solving over the top

Loved it!

Excellent narration. Fun and interesting story. Captured the essence of youthful self awareness and the questions it entails

One of the best mystery books I’ve read (listened to). I liked it better than knives out

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2021

the narrator was a bit cringe. (with no disrespect, but I wasn't the best). The plot had potential, but in my opinion it did not deliver. the puzzle were a bit boring with kind of uninteresting results. the "twist" were not surprising at all. I expected a lot more from this book being that it is often compared to knives out, but in my opinion this read was a huge let down. Even the "big reveal" at the end, let a lot to be desired.
