Summary
At first, Into the Forest was a word-of-mouth favorite of booksellers. Soon, larger publishing houses were noticing Jean Hegland's debut novel and giving it rave reviews. Powerful and disturbing, Into the Forest offers images of an all-too-believable future. As America collapses in the chaos of war, pollution, and bankruptcy, two sisters pool their resources to survive alone in the hills above San Francisco. Although dwindling food and increasing isolation threaten them, they soon find a more immediate danger standing at their door. When a young man arrives, his friendship offers tantalizing fulfillment, but his love threatens to divide the sisters. Hegland's provocative work is reminiscent of George Orwell's 1984 and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. It infuses a tale of survival with startling insights into a young woman's quest for strength.

It was interesting and well written. The post-trauma incest was completely unnecessary and the magic production of breastmilk was scientifically preposterous. Neither was necessary to support the strong bond between sisters.

I was glad I decided to give this book a try. I was engrossed from the very start. The narration is also supurb. Worth this months credit!

Great book! This is one of my favourite movies! I didn’t know it was based off of a novel! What a nice surprise! I chose this book from my free VIP selection and I’m glad I did! I love the dystopian theme and this book didn’t disappoint! The narrator was great although I felt a younger voice would have been better (only because of the movie actors) One negative I should mention is the recording had a mirrored voice track which is delayed by a few milliseconds. I couldn’t hear it when I played it on the phone but I could definitely hear it while using ear buds/phones. Pretty annoying!

Good enough for a free book. The narrator would have been more believable if younger sounding, though she did a good job. The story was well written and I loved the science and nature studies. The rape scene was not integrated well, the magic breast milk was also creepy and illegitimatized the book. Worth the read overall

Hard to believe this was not written more recently! An engrossing story that was very thought provoking!

incredibly boring

A completely relentless bummer. Trigger warnings for literally everything from sexual assault to incest, plus some childbirth and chainsaws for some extra oof. Well written I guess - a little one-dimensional. I'm still recovering.

The book was very interesting and totally captured my attention. It is everything I hoped it would be, but not predictable in any way. The narrator was excellent, but I dropped a star because I could hear noises in the background, like voices and ringing phones, which detracted from my enjoyment. Still fully worth listening to.

I tried to like this book as the subject matter interested me. It seemed like it might be going somewhere so I listened to at least half but could not continue to spend time on it. I also did not enjoy to narrator.
