Summary
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone returns with an “edge-of-your-seat thriller” (USA TODAY) about a young woman’s disappearance and a group of strangers whose lives intersect in its wake.

Young Saffyre Maddox spent three years under the care of renowned child psychologist Roan Fours. When Dr. Fours decides their sessions should end, Saffyre feels abandoned. She begins looking for ways to connect with him, from waiting outside his office to walking through his neighborhood late at night. She soon learns more than she ever wanted to about Roan and his deceptively perfect family life. On a chilly Valentine’s night, Saffyre disappears, taking any secrets she has learned with her.

Owen Pick’s life is falling apart. In his thirties and living in his aunt’s spare bedroom, he has just been suspended from his job as a teacher after accusations of sexual misconduct—accusations he strongly denies. Searching for professional advice online, he is inadvertently sucked into the dark world of incel forums, where he meets a charismatic and mysterious figure.

Owen lives across the street from the Fours family. The Fours have a bad feeling about their neighbor; Owen is a bit creepy and their teenaged daughter swears he followed her home from the train station one night. Could Owen be responsible? What happened to the beautiful missing Saffyre, and does her disappearance truly connect them all?

Evocative, vivid, and unputdownable, Lisa Jewell’s latest thriller is another “haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read” (Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author).

The story kept me hanging on for more! I really enjoyed the contrast between the different narrators and the stories they were telling!

I’ve really enjoyed every Lisa Jewell crimi I’ve listened to - about six of them. When I run out, I might try some of her non-thriller books, too. She does a good job developing characters that are “grey” - gullible and/or flawed and at some point in the story, suspicious. But she also does a good job of wrapping up her stories in a way that leaves me satisfied after keeping me interested with twists and turns. There’s a humanity in her stories that I like, juxtaposing the downtrodden against the lucky, the good, the bad and the ugly sides to each character’s story. The emerging unexpected connections are always delightful and believable. But the stories are always accessible and not overly complicated, making for a good listen while exercising, cleaning, driving, etc.

Another good book by Lisa Jewell. Had some slow parts, but definitely some good plot twists that kept me interested. Narration was great too.

Definitely wasn’t the best Lisa Jewell book. It honestly wasn’t interesting until maybe half way through and even then it was anticlimactic.

This was a great "listen" and would have been a real page-turner in book format. The author's ability to let the components of a mystery come to light with such patience makes the reader want to know everything faster. Jewel is a talented writer. She assembles the unfolding of the plot with such finesse and delicacy, and creates characters with none of the harshness of a lot of writers. One reader's review states that the reader worked out the mystery early on - not sure how since the relevant character does not show up until about two-thirds of the way through. Three people narrated this book and each did a great job. I would highly recommend this audiobook.

If I had to choose one word to describe this book it would be anticlimactic. Just wasn’t for me.

I thought this was just ok. Kept my interest, but pretty easily figured out the "mystery" early on.

Loved this book and the narrator.

This was a good book with lots of twists. I enjoyed it a lot. The only problem I had was the names of three of the male characters. Rowan, Owen, and Aaron all sounded the same with the British accent. I took very close listening and concentration to get them sorted out in the beginning.

Great suspense, right to the very end, last word. Definitely recommend it!!!!
