Summary
“I’ve made no secret of what I want… You. It’s always been you.”

Wren Embervale, alchemist-turned-assassin, finds solace in only one thing: seeking vengeance for the death of her friends. The wars of the past may be over, but her thirst for revenge is far from quenched.

For years, she has been content with her poisons and potions for company, but when an unknown form of alchemy is used to attack a king of the midrealms, Wren’s time in the shadows comes to an end.

She’s offered a place at the ancient alchemy academy of Drevenor to find a cure to the dark magic threatening the kingdoms. To win her spot, she must conquer the Gauntlet, a grueling series of deadly trials that could cost her sanity, or her life.

More is at play than sabotage from fellow competitors. Magic wielders are being targeted and Wren becomes tangled in a dangerous web of deception and bloodshed that puts the entire realm at risk.

But the biggest threat of all might come from the man assigned to protect her—Torj Elderbrock, the silver-haired war hero who has hated her since she assassinated his last charge.

Their shared history ignites a simmering tension that threatens to consume them both.

Peace is fragile, trust is scarce and enemies lurk around every corner… Will love heal all wounds—or will it be the most lethal poison of all?

Iron & Embers is the breathtaking first installment in the epic fantasy romance series, The Ashes of Thezmarr. With its lush world-building, sizzling chemistry, and heart-pounding action it’s perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, From Blood & Ash, and The Bridge Kingdom.

I grabbed Audiobooks for examples on romance scenes women can enjoy. This book was a freebie, not my main listen. The book gets interesting around chapter 25. By today's technical standpoint, the writing is mediocre. Though, I personally prefer extensive exposition. I'm not sure the demographic for the romance scenes. If it were one or two, they can be brushed off, but they happened every other hour. I gave my wife a listen to five of them. They do nothing for either of us, not romantically nor theatrically. This could all be ignored for a 5-star review due to the story. However, there is so much world building being ignored. So many hints to amazing wonders that is set aside for the main narrative of internal disdain. I could easily get lost in this world if it were not for the obvious injections of destructive theology and the anti-climactic end screaming, "women don't need no man!" In fact, the protagonist does shout that in the book, rephrased. One lost star due to uninspired, frequent romance scenes, and one star lost due to net negative ideology. The book would have had the same impact or better if those aspects were removed. I would have enjoyed more fantastical scenes with the protagonist's alchemical prowess and magical skill with descriptive exposition and dramatic scenery, and less of the two other aspects.

I loved diving into Wren and Torj's story! The banter between them is hilarious and the writing is just incredible. The emotional roller-coaster through this book had me hanging on for dear life. One page, I'm laughing so hard that tears are streaming down my face then 10 pages later I'm heartbroken! I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the next book, and the wait is painful!

I'm conflicted, and so 3 stars it is. Wonderful story, deep characters, but that ending hurt my heart.

I enjoyed aspects of this book but I also found that it fell short in a few ways. When I love a book I feel sad when it ends. In case of this book, I was okay with it. I don’t feel compelled to read the sequel.

Good first book, I echo some of the other authors, it was extremely romancy and it appears the climax of what the author was trying to achieve is a climax from the lead charachters. It's a shame when the fight scenes and exploration of other characters were so good smh. Additionally, multiple narration are often not good...this was ok but still like to hear one perspective not two as it could expand more around one central character.

I had first listened to the Fate & Furies series. I thought it was a continuum of that saga, so i was pleased to see it was about Wren and Torj. I was sad at the end that she hadn't been given all the facts. Looking forward to the next book and the continuing saga. Well written and a new favorite author for me.

I chose this book because I enjoy sappy romance novels when I’m taking a break from reading dense literature for my studies, however this was not “soft romance”. I was taken aback when the first ‘intimate’ scene played through as it was completely unexpected and a little over the top. I’m taking my jaw DROPPED. If that’s your thing, this book is full of it. I’m talking their intimate life is the main plot of the book. If you prefer the romance to be more of a side-plot and subtle like I do, then this cover may not be for you. That being said, the pacing of the book is nice and I found myself unable to leave it unfinished and finished it rather quickly.

Such a great story and the character chemistry was on fire.

FYI this is NOT this first book, there’s a whole other series before this one, so lots of spoilers for that series in this book. I mostly liked this book but did not like the ending - but that could just be me, I hate it when people sacrifice without asking their beloved if it’s what they want. Really just a setup for the next book.

It’s was okay, I finished it, but definitely felt very slow and dragged on most of the book.

Profile Avatar Alice R. Jul 2025

I think the book is good but the narrator makes it difficult to get through this book. hopefully I will get through it

Profile Avatar Hoshi Jun 2025

Got confused at times because this seems to be another continuation of a previous series

Love it ♥️

I liked the story but there were times it jumped around so much it was hard to keep track of. All in all a good read.

Profile Avatar John S. Jun 2025

Narration was so bad I gave up listening. What I did listen to, sounded like a romance novel.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2025

The story is fine .I had to stop listening because of male narrator . I’m struggling with second embarrassing for the male characters of this book.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2025

The story was predictable and contrived…I tried to finish it but halfway through was the best I could stomach.

Profile Avatar Taylor M. Mar 2025

The audio is terrible but this book is great; the female sounds like it’s animated, the guy wasn’t as bad but still sounded fake at parts. Legends audio was much better.
