Unabridged Audiobook
Well written, accessible and highly entertaining, this is pop history at its finest. Unfortunately, being popular history means there are parts that are biased, rascist, or generally untrue according to the latest scholarship. The author's statements regarding the Mongols are appalling, for all that he does quote (European) chroniclers. But the popular historical narrative moves slowly, so we probably shouldn't expect better. The biggest issue I have with this book is its structure. In that there doesn't appear to be one. The author doesn't seem to follow either the timeline of the "Song of Ice and Fire" books or the chronological history and as a result bounces from topic to topic with little narrative sense. It can get confusing jumping 300 years of history in either direction with no warning.
Love this as I do all of his works
