Summary
Follows the fortunes of the son of a noble Saxon family in Norman England as he woos his lady, disobeys his father, and is loved by another. Set in late 12C England and in Palestine with Richard Cœur-de-Lion at the Crusades, it’s another ripping historical yarn by Scott.

Sir Walter Scott would turn in his grave over many of the narrations - clipped North American accents do not lend themselves well to medieval 12th century English. Imagine the works of Mark Twain read by an old Etonian - then you have the desecration of this adventure story. The Latin texts were pretty woefully delivered- I didn’t recognise any of it!

The same complaint I always have. Why do you have more that one narrator?!! Some were ok. Some were terrible and some were great. My husband kept asking me “what book are you listening to now”

As well as being a pleasant read, the story was interesting in many ways in a historical light, more so as it was written in the early 1800’s - Christian/Jew relations and prejudices, and the Church’s bigotry couched in zealousness - worth a read on many levels. The narration was average - there was a lady narrating for ages, and she was good and clear, then it switched to various narrators, some good, some okay, and some downright terrible.

I love the story...a classic tale set in the time of Robin Hood...but not like most. Love, hate, prejudice, jealousy, battles, & jousts are faithfully integrated. worth the listen. The sad thing is, the initial narrator stops at a chapter in the early 20's.
