Unabridged Audiobook
A very long and meandering tale, yet an interesting look into life on the Thames boats in the early 19th century. With many curious personalities and their interactions among the common working classes, their business counterparts, privileged wealthy, and many others plying their trades of the day. The book vividly illustrates the culture, language, and morals of their times. Written by someone who was firsthand witness to the period and especially life in the Royal Navy. My guess is that he frequented the river and often used these river taxis services himself. The author uses some clever style in his characters' dialog exchanges (i.e. cluck, cluck), which the narrator expertly navigated and presented. Not an action novel, but a good read for anyone curious about the people and institutions then.
