Summary
These three charming Japanese Fairy Tales were translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki in 1908. Although taken from actual Japanese folk stories, these were not literal translations, but somewhat Westernized for American readers. These stories combine fictitious creatures and magical animals with the lives of normal humans and provide an insight into a piece of ancient Japan.

The stories in this volume include:
- My Lord Bag of Rice
- The Tongue-Cut Sparrow
- The Story of Urashima Taro, the Fisher Lad

Traditional Japanese tales, written in a beautiful manner, sounding exactly like you would imagine. I'm a big fan of Japanese culture, but this was my first reading (technically listening) folk stories of theirs. And it's really interesting to see how the ancient beliefs still very influentially appear as motives in modern art in Japan (especially if you're a manga/ anime enthusiast). I recommend the listen - it can be really meaningful and cautionary, and the voice of the narrator is soothing and calm.

Great short collection of fairy tales. I have re-listened a few times

Slowly paced traditional Japanese folk tales interesting enough to listen to with young children. My mind would wonder off occasionally as I’m not used to such a soothing style of narration. I would have liked for a Japanese person to read these stories but I imagine the recording to be old. Still, a lovely insight into another culture.
