Then he is introduced to Mrs Opalsen, wife of a wealthy stockbroker, and to the celebrated string of pearls she wears about her throat.

She insists on showing them off in her suite. Within minutes of the case being fetched from the safe, the pearls are gone.

The maid was in the room. The chambermaid was in the corridor. Both had opportunity, and one of them is arrested before the afternoon is out. But Poirot has noticed something about the timing that nobody else finds worth remarking upon, and he is far from satisfied.
