Joan of Arc

Written By: Mark Twain

Narrated By: Michael Anthony

Duration: 15 hours 46 minutes

Summary:

Mark Twain considered this biography his best and most important work. Twain reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying detailed accounts by both the French, for whom the Girl in White Armor raised an army to return the Dauphin to the throne, and the English, pitted against the French in the Hundred Years' War, who were ultimately Joan's executioners.

The depth of this book is outstanding, as is the perspective which the author decided to tell the story from. This is truely a 'must read' for anyone who enjoys accurate history.

As a Mark Twain admirer, I was interested to see how (I had no idea why) he should treat this piece of history. He was, as always, delightful. I had no way of assessing the accuracy of his history(I have since learned that he did a lot of study and research); but I consistently heard the voice, the sensibilities and even the sense of humour of this great man. the subject lends itself to an audio book. Good stuff!

Quite long but one of the best books I have rented. Worth it for anyone. Easy to listen to.

To tell you the truth, until I listened to this book and did a little research on the internet, I wasn't entirely sure that Joan of Arc was a real historical figure. The story is told in the folksy manner you would expect from Twain, especially if you're at all familiar with any of his short stories, but I really enjoyed listening to it anyway---and in fact DID listen to the whole thing (all 13 CD's) TWICE, and parts of it _3_ times!!
