Like Wuthering Heights, the center of this story is a dramatic love triangle, the setting is a huge English manor. Olivia Marchmont has always "done her duty." However, when she falls in love and her beloved is in love with another woman, the malice of her heart is released in full view. In this dramatic tale, the vivid description of the country is also important- as if nature has a part in it. Unlike many novels, nobody gets what they deserve at the end. Or do they? Read and decide for yourself. (Summary by Stav Nisser)

An atmospheric tale of love, greed and obsession. Braddon is, as usual, less interested in arriving at a cheerful romantic ending than she is in exploring troubled psyches and the lengths amoral people will go to get what they want. Plenty of mystery here but less far-fetched villainy than in many of her other sensation stories. This story includes one of her most intriguing pivotal characters, Olivia Marchmont whose ironclad, almost heroic, willpower and monomaniacal passion make her a strange and scary force to be reckoned with. Wondering what she and the other antagonists will do to foil the heroes is fun and overshadows the love triangle (or, actually, love quadrangle!).
