Summary
Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was twenty-three and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age thirty-eight. Richard Bushman, an esteemed cultural historian and a practicing Mormon, moves beyond the popular stereotype of Smith as a colorful fraud to explore his personality, his relationships with others, and how he received revelations. An arresting narrative of the birth of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling also brilliantly evaluates the prophet’s bold contributions to Christian theology and his cultural place in the modern world.

What listeners say
The audiobook presents a historical account that some listeners found enlightening and well-described. Many appreciated the narrator's performance and the importance of the historical content. However, a few listeners expressed issues with playback and found certain repetitive elements challenging to maintain focus on. Overall, it is considered a valuable resource from a faithful perspective, though some desired a more concise historical focus.

A really good history of one of the most controversial figures in religion. I’m not sure how anyone could believe someone who claimed he discovered golden tablets, wouldn’t show anyone and said he spoke to god. Imcould go on and on but u get it. But a solid book.

Fabulous history of the prophet and seer of the Lord. An uncomfortable at times look at the man I know to be God’s servant and restorer of the Church of Jesus Christ. Thank you for this history and fair description.

I learned it all.

It was a very interesting book but I would have preferred less “scripture” and just give us the history. I found myself drifting off when I got the same version of repetitive “revelation”. I like that the book comes from the faithful approach and is not just a book bashing the Mormon faith. I just wonder why Emma did not get a personal witness of the practice of poligamy like many of Joseph’s other brides.
