Summary
#1 New York Times Bestseller!

Read by Academy Award–winning actress Viola Davis.

“Davis is a force of nature, and her performance is riveting.” — Kirkus Reviews

Viola Davis and the world's #1 bestselling author James Patterson’s Judge Stone "delivers first-class courtroom drama, small-town excitement, and strong characters all wrapped in a moral dilemma. Tense, readable, and relevant.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“Talk about a power combo! ... With Davis’s razor-sharp emotional insight and Patterson’s mastery of rocket-fuel pacing, this is the dream team to deliver an up-all-night read that will keep the group chat buzzing.” —Oprah Daily

“Wonderfully satisfying ... This legal thriller from [a] superstar duo ... demands attention from its opening pages and never lets go.” —Booklist, starred review

All rise... for Judge Stone.

The most respected citizen in Union Springs, Alabama (population 3,314), is Judge Mary Stone. She holds two responsibilities sacred: running her family farm and presiding over her courtroom. It's there she draws the most controversial case in the history of the South.

Criminally, it’s open-and-shut.

Ethically, there is no middle ground. Essentially, it’s a choice between life and death.

No judge can satisfy everyone. It would be dangerous to try. But Judge Stone is willing to fight to bring justice to the people and place she loves.

I loved this book and having it read by Viola Davis made it even better. I'm a Democrat from Alabama and while I'm not a lawyer, it all rang true. The problems with sewage and rape and vengeful people is familiar. I don't know that Mary would have won but I sure hope Doug Jones does. He's worth googling if you're not familiar with our current politics. Well done!

Felt as if I was a part of this story although it was set in Alabama, it could have happened in Texas, Mississippi or any of the southern states. Great work Mr. Patterson Excellent! I didn’t want this one to end! Such a powerful story, especially given the latest issues surrounding abortion rights, politics, race, justice, and the pressure of divided communities. It doesn’t shy away from the difficult conversations, which made it feel so timely and important right now. Viola Davis brings so much life to the story! You could feel her emotional insight the whole way through. As soon as I finished, I looked to see what else she’s narrated that I haven’t already listened to! I really hope this one is made into a movie, with Viola, of course!

This book was excellent! I loved Viola reading and pictured her as the character the whole time. I’m sure she will star in a movie made from this

Profile Avatar Dean S. Apr 2026

I almost turned it off upon discovering it was going to be a left vs right political hot button issue book. I don’t want to hear about anyone’s political opinions, I want to be entertained. Wow, am I glad I didn’t! Viola Davis is magic as the narrator. The characters are engaging and relatable, the story, while political in nature is presented in a way to make you see things from both prospectives. I sincerely hope Patterson/Davis continue their partnership. The world needs more Judge Stone.
