I am Kaikayi. The same Kaikayi who sent her stepson Ramchandra to an exile of 14 years in deadly forests, infested with dangers of devils and rakshas. That too on the eve of his coronation as King of Kausala. My daughter in law Seeta had to face the harsh consequences of this forced exile. My step son Lakshman had almost lost his life in battle with Strong army of Ravan, the King of Lanka. Not just that, I insisted on coronation of my own son Bharat. And to get all this done I tricked my husband Maharaj Dashrath by using his two blind commitments to me. He lost his life out of grief. Thus I was a wicked and selfish woman in the story of ‘Ramayan’. This perception was further enhanced by Goswami Tulsidas when he rewrote Ramayana in verses as ‘Ramcharitmanas’ which reached the masses. Was I a bad woman when Maharaja Dashrath proposed to marry me? Did I ever differentiate between my own son and his three step brothers? Was I so cruel who let her husband die for her demands? Was I not concerned about the well-being of our kingdom? Unfortunately, no one ever asked these questions! Neither Valmiki, nor Tulsidas ! And none of the millions of readers of both their books !
