Summary
To survive here, you either grow wings or claws.

Elitsa Serlov only cares about two things — earning enough money to start a new life and finding the rogue mage who murdered her mother. But years without leads have left her jaded, and she won’t let anyone — friend or foe — get in her way.

In Casekraia, anyone can use magic if they’re desperate enough to rent relics from the Tower, a corrupt guild of mages more concerned with their own wealth than the welfare of the people. Elitsa has spent the last three years as a reclamation agent for the Guild, hunting down her own people for precious coin and the hope of uncovering what happened to her mother.

Just one week before her contract with the Tower is set to expire, Elitsa is coerced into a dangerous conspiracy by a gang of rebellious thieves. With her loyalty to the Tower in question, Elitsa must decide between her quest for revenge and charting a new course for her life.

With captivating characters, daring heists, and dangerous magic, this enchanting fantasy adventure spins a tale about the power of hope and friendship and our connection to the world around us.

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦ The narrator Kate Reading did a great job bringing so many characters to life through this audiobook which gave the story that spark that was needed, however, I felt when came to Elitsa and bringing this character to life something was missing? I couldn't feel many emotions coming from Elitsa on either of the events she has gone through, something from Elitsa just felt flat and her "voice" wasn't easily delimited by the other characters. There are lots of characters to keep track of, but they're not remaining throughout the story which can make you confused and perhaps a bit frustrated because when you get the time to be familiar with a group of characters in the next chapter it changes and you're met with another group of characters. The magic system overall was really interesting however, I wanted it to be a bit more detailed and explained. The rules and the layout was missing and made me confused on how exactly their magic works. But the idea of this system was actually interesting and I would've loved for the rules and layout to be explained from the get-go so we're aware of how things are actually working. I felt the plot twist was kind of missing or perhaps it didn't have that big boom I usually expect from plot twists. Overall the audiobook was entertaining and I'll definitely check the eBook too for another type of experience. I really enjoyed this audiobook! The narrator has this deep female voice that is easy to follow the story with! She manages to make all the characters distinguishable and enjoyable! Usually all the world building and magic system gets confusing for me to listen to but this time I kept up just fine! The world building is phenomenal! I felt like I could picture it all in my mind!! And I like the magic system - the way you can hold essence in relics and then use it for different kinds of magic is really cool! There's mystery and lots of adventure and a very slow burn romance... all in all I enjoyed it and can't wait for Book 2!!

I really enjoyed this story! The magic system was super unique; drawing essences from nature into mage relics for later use. There was a lot of mystery, betrayal, action, magical feats, and a very slow burn romance that I’m very invested in. The book wraps up well but still left me wanting to know what happens in the next installment! I definitely recommend for those who like a lot of intrigue in their fantasy.

I absolutely LOVED how believable the characters are! Elitsa is such a relatable character. I loved her from the very first few pages. I like it when books have me hooked at page one, and this one definitely did. There was amazing world-building, the magic system was just *chef's kiss*, and the twists and turns throughout were perfect. Kept me captivated the whole book. I loved the bits and pieces of a potential romance sparking throughout the book as well. The narrator was amazing and was perfect for this book. I definitely CANNOT wait until book 2!
